Beginning C for Arduino, Second Edition is written for those who have no prior experience with microcontrollers or programming but want to experiment with and learn about both.

Beginning C for Arduino

This book introduces you to the C programming language, reinforcing each programming structure with a simple demonstration of how to use C to control the Arduino family of microcontrollers. It has been updated with new projects and new boards.

Author Jack Purdum uses an engaging style to teach effective programming techniques using examples that have been perfected through his 25 years of university teaching.

Beginning C for Arduino, Second Edition will teach you how to do the following:

  • The C programming language.
  • How to use C to control a microcontroller and related hardware.
  • How to extend C by creating your libraries, including an introduction to object-oriented programming.

Working with data types, making decisions, and writing control loops are just a few of the fundamental programming concepts you’ll master throughout the book. You’ll next progress to some of the trickier aspects of C programming, such as manipulating pointers, working with the C preprocessor, and effectively tackling file I/O. Each chapter concludes with a series of activities and review questions to test your knowledge and reinforce what you’ve learned.

Review Beginning C for Arduino

“The book is highly readable and starts with the basics, such as how to install the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE).” The book's appendix has a wealth of useful information on how and where to order the parts and boards. I would strongly advise fashioning the book in a hands-on manner rather than simply reading it. It will be a blast reading it and implementing the programs for high school and beginning college students. It's something I highly recommend. (April 2016; Naga Narayanaswamy, Computing Reviews).

This is an excellently written programming manual. It may be more in-depth than some readers would prefer, but it provides a solid basis for understanding programming concepts in general and the specific nuances of C for Arduino. I think it strikes the perfect balance between being solidly factual and having an accessible, conversational tone. Reading it gives me the feeling of being in a college classroom with a first-rate professor who knows his subject matter in absolute detail and who understands how to effectively teach it. There are a few editing flaws, but in general, this is the best-written technical manual I’ve read in a long time. But understand that it’s an in-depth study of programming concepts.
